My name is TJ, I'm the founder of Kiyo Pure. By now, you've probably spent a while looking through our site to truly understand our brand. I know because I was in a similar situation to you a little over a year ago. I've been an athlete all my life, and the toll of contact sports, weight lifting, and tight muscles caught up to me. No matter how much time I'd spend in the pool, yoga studio, or on a foam roller, my back, hips, and knees hurt. To make matters worse, the pain was nonstop. It actually got worse as I tried to sleep, and after too many nights of tossing and turning in pain, I realized that my sleep setup might be what's aggravating my issues. I invested way too much money in every sleep aid under the sun: red light filters, melatonin, blackout shades, you name it. Nothing really worked, and I was fed up. Luckily, I realized that a number of the spine specialists—at this point I had seen spine doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and witch doctors (literally)—mentioned that my back was incredibly inflamed and the way to reduce the inflammation was by keeping my spine aligned as I slept.
Tatami
Coming to this realization, I read everything on spine alignment that I could find. Like many of you, I came across the emphasis on spine alignment by the Japanese. The most well-known practice of this is via the Tatami mat. Again, as I'm sure many of you were, I was highly skeptical, but nonetheless turned to the practice in despair. Being that I had spent thousands on my pain already, I wasn't keen on dropping a few hundred more dollars on the mat, so my makeshift Tatami setup was me sleeping on top of my duvet on the floor. My skepticism was proven wrong when I woke up the next day with my back feeling better than ever! After some light stretching and many, many cracks, my back didn't feel worse. I was thrilled—this was my saving grace until I realized as the day wore on that my hips and knees really hurt. I went to go check them out and realized that my hips had bruises all over them. Back to the drawing board I went because the pain was unbearable on my hips and knees.
One Thing After Another
When I went to the follow-up visits for my back, I told the doctors (I was on a rotation of 6 doctors at the time) about my experience and had a number of great conversations that spurred the Diamond Pillow. We realized that the issue really was my spine being way out of alignment, and my super firm mattress with a super firm mattress topper was making my hips and knees hurt. So, we played with addition by subtraction. They had me remove the mattress topper and put a pillow between my legs. Like magic, after a few nights in a row, I slept better and better and woke up in less and less pain. Every night for months, I slept with the pillow between my legs, and my doctors loved the new reports of my pain starting to subside and my life returning to normal. That was until I started to realize how hot I was getting when I slept, how gross the pillow was looking, and how small it was. Whereas before, I would wake up in pain, now I was waking up in a pool of sweat with the pillow nowhere to be found.
Sleep Study
One of my doctors referred me to a sleep study specialist, and after being hooked up with every wire imaginable for two weeks of sleeping, they found something pretty shocking: my body temperature would rise rather than fall, and I would toss and turn all the time. Armed with this info, I began searching for a solution but couldn't find anything. I tried dozens of pillows, spent hundreds more, and finally said enough.
Enter: The Diamond Pillow
At this point, I had personally seen over 50 spine specialists over the course of 2 years and had every test, MRI, and study done on me. I refused to use pain meds for my back because of the horror stories of lives ruined by them, and I refused to have surgery on my back. Knowing I was at my wit's end, I realized that I could build the pillow that helps me and millions of people who struggle with the same thing I do. I contacted the 50+ specialists I had seen and asked them for the attributes of the perfect pillow for someone like me and asked them to introduce me to their spine specialist colleagues to do the same. After over 1,000 conversations, we found our answer. A body pillow is the best for this because, as humans, we naturally like to sleep in the fetal position. That's why it's called the fetal position—because before we're born, we're always in that position. If you have twins in the womb, then often you see them almost hugging each other. That's because we have a natural inclination to hold onto someone or something in this position. Having a body pillow that's long enough for people to "big spoon," but with a gradual incline so the spine, hips, and knees stay aligned, does wonders for the body. When you pair that with a cooling core, you have a way to drop your core temperature to help you sleep better and longer.
The Best
Rather than just make ten different solutions, we packaged them into one. We have a proprietary 30" long, 14" wide memory foam body pillow that is diamond-shaped for the optimal 7.33-degree gradient to comfortably support all-sized people. Tip to tip, the diamond is 7" thick in the center and 3" on the edges. We made the foam medium-firm and infused it with our proprietary cooling gel and cooling holes. It's packaged in 100% cotton that's the highest level of Standard Oeko-Tex certified. Basically, all of this is to say: we made the best sleep product in years. Everyone can benefit from this (especially athletes and pregnant mothers). You reduce inflammation, cool your core, and return to your natural state. Why are you waiting?
